This movie was a pleasant surprise. I've heard of the song but to learn how this song was inspired was a mind blowing treat. “I Can Only Imagine” tells the backstory of how a song came to exist. Not just any song but the best-selling Christian single of all time. This movie’s message is all about inspiration and forgiveness of how MercyMe front man Bart Millard writes the lyrics to the track that will launch their debut album to triple-platinum status. This was one of those movies where it's a guaranteed emotional ride to say the least. Dennis Quade does a phenomenal job acting, as well as Madeline Carroll, Trace Adkins, and Priscilla Shirer.
Appearing in his first screen role, J. Michael Finley appearing as the song writer Bart Millard has considerable stage experience (he made his Broadway debut in “Les Misérables”), and has done a great job in this role as well.
Distributed by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, the Oklahoma-made film I Can Only Imagine shattered box office expectations bringing in $17.1 million during its opening weekend in theaters across North America. The film also ranks as the #1 independent film released in America this week and marks Roadside Attractions highest theatrical debut ever. I cannot say it enough but please son't sleep on this film. I highly recommend this movie! I Can Only Imagine was directed by the Erin Brothers who also brought you such movies as Woodlawn and Mom's Night Out. I Can Only Imagine is rated PG for thematic elements including some violence.
